Car alarms have never stopped a single determined car thief and I think we all know it

Car alarms have been waking up entire neighborhoods for decades and I genuinely cannot think of a single story where someone heard one, looked out their window, and stopped a theft in progress. Not one. Meanwhile raccoons, a stiff breeze, a shopping cart rolling through a parking lot — all apparently threatening enough to trigger a full emergency broadcast at 2am. The practical side of my brain wonders if car alarms ever really solved the problem they were built to solve, or if at some point they just became noise we agreed to collectively ignore. And yet they keep getting installed.
